Spider-Man's Web Wings in Homecoming teaser
It’s been a busy few weeks for comic book movies with the likes of Logan, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Valerian and now Spider-Man homecoming getting teasers and trailers. Not even a week after the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer Marvel and Sony have released their Spider-Man: Homecoming teaser.
In the short 17 seconds we only catch a glimpse of Tom Holland as Peter Parker with the majority shot from Spider-Man’s point of view. The focus of the teaser seems to be making sure that the audience know that Tony Stark is an influential character to the Web-Slinger in this new Spider-Man franchise. Even though we have seen Spider-Man in the MCU during the events of Captain America: Civil War the average Joe moviegoer might be forgiven for thinking this will just be another sub-par Spider-Man movie and equally, Sony could be forgiven for this rather on the nose connection to the MCU but the fact remains that this Spider-Man is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
For a lot of the 17 seconds we are looking at Happy Hogan played by Jon Favreau who could be seen as the Godfather of the MCU (along with Kevin Feige). It was was Favreau’s turn as director of Iron Man back in 2008 that have given a backbone to the decade long mega franchise and it seems right that he is still involved in this universe.
The thing that has sparked most debate online is the glimpse of Spider-Man’s web wings that we get. It didn’t really excite me to be honest and maybe that is in small part because of the connection of the web wings that I make to extreme sports and in movie terms, the Point Break remake. I am sure that I will feel better when I see the full Homecoming trailer but overall this did not excite me any more for the movie. Having said that, it is just a teaser after all and the thing that hard-core fans seem to be taking away from it is the reference to the way that Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko originally drew the character in the comics. It is a nice nod but I just can’t shake off that Point Break connection that seems to be growing in my small brain.
The Spider-Man: Homecoming release date is July 7th 2017 in the USA and features Tom Holland as Peter Parker, Michael Keaton as The Vulture, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May. What did you think of the teaser? Did you like it and were you happy with the reference to Steve Ditko?
